About The Rice Purity Test

Our mission, our story, and why we built this

Who We Are

We are a small, independent team passionate about building clean, fast, and genuinely useful web experiences. The Rice Purity Test at ricepuritytest.fyi is our version of one of the internet's most enduring traditions — built from scratch to be faster, more private, and better designed than what currently exists.

We are not affiliated with Rice University. This is a fan-made, independent digital recreation of the well-known purity test tradition that originated at Rice University in 1924. All quiz content is based on the original public-domain questions shared and adapted by students over decades.

Our Mission

Our mission is simple: provide the best, most accessible, and most privacy-respecting version of the Rice Purity Test online. We believe that:

The History of the Rice Purity Test

The Rice Purity Test has a surprisingly rich history. It began in 1924 at Rice University in Houston, Texas, where students created a short survey to measure how "pure" freshmen were as they started their college journey. It was never meant to be judgemental — it was a low-stakes, fun way to bond during O-Week (Orientation Week).

Over the decades the test grew. By the 1980s it had evolved into a 100-question format covering romance, intimacy, alcohol, substances, law, and more adventurous experiences. It became a treasured annual tradition at Rice — students would take it at the beginning of college and retake it at the end to see how much they had "changed."

The internet changed everything. In the 1990s and early 2000s, the test spread far beyond Houston — across forums, chat rooms, and early social networks. By the 2010s it was a globally recognised cultural phenomenon. Today in 2026, it is taken by tens of millions of people each year across all age groups and all over the world.

Why We Built This Version

Most existing versions of the Rice Purity Test online are outdated, slow, filled with intrusive ads, or poorly designed. We set out to build the version we always wished existed: fast-loading, beautifully designed, completely anonymous, and with zero hidden data collection.

We also believe in content integrity — using the actual, widely-recognised 100 questions from the original test rather than made-up replacements, and being transparent about our scoring, our design decisions, and our business model.
